LEGO sets are usually associated with building small replicas of tall buildings and large objects, like a Japanese castle or the Eiffel Tower. Now, the toy manufacturer has turned to something much smaller for inspiration. LEGO has introduced The Insect Collection, which offers the opportunity to build realistic life-size models of three bugs—a Blue Morpho butterfly, a Hercules beetle, and a Chinese mantis.

As opposed to the more pixelated look that results from building with blocks, the small scale of LEGO bricks works wondrously when bringing these bugs to life. One of the most fascinating aspects of The Insect Collection is how detailed the models are, from the multiple shades of blue on the butterfly's wings to the antennae on the mantis’ head.

Fan designer José María Pérez Suero, from Spain, is the creator of this set. “I’ve always found insects interesting, and loved learning about their rules and roles in our ecosystem,” says Pérez Suero. The Insect Collection has its origins in the LEGO Ideas platform, where fans submit their own set ideas and, with enough community support, they can become an official LEGO product.

Tapping into the critter inspiration behind this set, LEGO has announced an accompanying “Green Noise Playlist” with ASMR sounds. The music, produced by Emmy-nominated foley artist Sanaa Kelley, plays with the clicks of LEGO bricks and other natural elements to reimagine the unique sounds of each insect.

As a whole, The Insect Collection set offers a one-of-a-kind relaxing experience for LEGO fans. Once built, you'll get three posable models that will add a colorful touch to any shelf. This set will be released on September 7, 2023, but you can pre-order it right now on the LEGO webstore.
