A simple flick of the switch can transform a home from dark and asleep to bright and full of life. Ukraine-based artist Nikita Busyak captures this effect in his enchanting pen and ink illustrations of cityscapes. In each architectural drawing, he digitally manipulates the windows so that they glow with golden light, making it seem as though someone is home.

Busyak's passion for sketching began at an early age, and he refined his skills by drawing the world around him. But it wasn't until college that he developed an interest in digital art and what it could do for his practice. “I had a desire to combine traditional pen and ink sketches with digital art,” Busyak tells My Modern Met. “Then, when I was playing with light and shadows in my sketches, I had an idea to bring the buildings to life by adding light in the windows.”

From classical European structures to a solitary cabin in the woods to a block of apartment buildings, this subtle detail gives the sketches an alluring and intimate ambiance. “I instantly fell in love with the effect and realized that this was the style I've been searching for for so many years,” Busyak continues. He enhances the digital effects by photographing his illustrations in dim lighting, thereby letting the “false” light shine undisturbed. This simple trick makes it seem as though a small world exists within these two-dimensional renderings.
